Eddie Long is a CEO…NOT a “Bishop”

Please note, this blog is dedicated to exposing false gospels while presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ uncompromised. My goal is to present the true Gospel in such a way that the counterfeiters appear painfully obvious. This is not a blog dedicated to the downfall of Eddie Long, and I look forward to not dedicating so much time in feeding his ego – he just happens to be the wolf-de-jour lately.

That said, when my wife and I joined Club New Birth in 1996, the “theme” for the year was “Putting The House In Order”. This theme was in reference to Eddie Long’s sweeping power grab around 1994-1995. Eddie had been leading New Birth since 1987, and he grew tired of seeking approval from the Deacon Board – after all, he had been the pastor for 7 years…he shouldn’t have to answer to anyone.

Eddie summarily dismissed the entire Deacon’s Board and removed all structure of accountable from CNB – making himself the Chief – and appointed a “board” of minions to rubberstamp his proclamations. More than twenty years later, this board is still rubber stamping Eddie’s narcissistic cravings (even after exposure in a scathing Atlanta Journal-Constitution article from 2005 detailing Eddie’s lucrative earnings from his “non-profit” organization). Eddie revised the church’s constitution making clear that he was/is the Head Negro In Charge.

I clearly remember how Eddie bragged from the pulpit and preened about taking “control away from the Deacon Board” – under the guise of making leadership more transparent. What he did, however, was establish a fiefdom where all power emanated and rested with him and his hand-picked “amorbearers” and hangers-on. Certainly a Deacon Board should not control church operations, but the bible does specifically call for church polity (or government).

Christ is the Head of the Church (Ephesians 1:22; Colossians 1:18 and more…). The Church is to be free from external authority and control (again, Titus 1:5), but two offices were clearly established to help maintain order: Elders (Acts 14:23; Titus 1:5; 1 Timothy 5:17 and more…) and Deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13; Acts 6).

In fact, if Club New Birth had any polity, they would deal with Eddie’s alleged sex scandal according to scripture (emphasis added):

1 Timothy 5:19-21 (New American Standard Bible)

19Do not receive an accusation against an elder except on the basis of two or three witnesses.

20Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning.

21I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality.

So according to scripture – you know, the bible…that “thing” that Eddie’s club is supposed to use to govern spiritual matters – Eddie should be protesting his innocence FROM A PEW IN HIS CLUB – NOT FROM THE PULPIT! But what do you expect from an oligarchical pimpistry?

Eddie’s power grab is old history – I saw some of this firsthand.  After reading my community newspaper today recently, however, I was surprised to learn that Eddie revised Club New Birth’s articles of incorporation with the Georgia Secretary of State in 1997 – declaring that the church was now a corporation whose purpose is “to receive and maintain real or personal property”:

No say for New Birth members

Talk this week about whether Bishop Eddie Long might step down from New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in the wake of the gay sex scandal that has dominated the airwaves, raises a single question.

If it came to that, who can make Long leave his church?

According to New Birth’s restated articles of incorporation, filed with the Georgia Secretary of State on April 14, 1997 – none of its 25,000 members.

In fact, according to those articles, New Birth, the corporation, has no members, and its purpose is “to receive and maintain real or personal property.”

None of its 11 Articles of Incorporation indicate anything about it being a church or propagating Christianity.

That is in stark contrast to the church – Travelers Rest Baptist – that it succeeded in 1984.

As a point of history for all you non-Dekalb County (GA) residents, Travelers Rest became New Birth in 1984 after some members left to follow Ken Samuels, the then pastor (Samuels now leads the gay-leaning Victory Church in Stone Mountain, GA). New Birth hired Eddie in 1987, and the rest is history…

Not much surprises me about Eddie Long anymore – including that dead racoon he now let’s ride atop his skull – yet this revelation blew me away. The article goes on to say:

Article 9 of the restated articles states:

“The purposes for which the corporation is organized are to receive and maintain real or personal property, or both” and “to use and apply the whole or part of income for charitable, religious, scientific, literary or educational purposes” related to the corporation’s nonprofit status.

Article 6 reads:

“The Corporation hereby elects to have no members.

“Any action which would require a vote of members shall require only a vote of members of the Board of Directors, and no meeting or vote of members shall be required for this Corporation, any provision of the Articles of Incorporation of this Corporation or the Bylaws to the contrary withstanding.

“All rights which otherwise would vest in the members shall vest in the Directors.”

Conversely, other churches in the area include specific language regarding their purpose:

The Ray of Hope Christian Church has members, and no CEO. In its June 24, 1988, incorporation, it states that it is a “non-profit religious organization” formed to “proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Church in faithful response to God’s Will and purposes as revealed; to seek in all persons a faith and commitment to Jesus Christ, to serve the community of which it is a part; and to bring the Gospel message to bear upon society….and in all ways to seek to make known the love of God.”

So we already knew that Eddie Long is NOT a real bishop in accordance with 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, but at least we can confirm that he is officially a CEO – and Club New Birth is nothing more than a company (that enjoys tax exempt status, by the way). Incidentally, this company is artfully skilled at developing managers to spread Eddie’s false gospel in satelite churches, essentially making Eddie a franchise owner-operator. This revelation completely aligns with an article in this weekends Atlanta Journal-Constitution explaining Eddie’s “branding power” and how the sheeple at CNB are more faithful to Eddie than they are to God:

Bishop Eddie Long | Brand pastor built fosters fierce member loyalty

ATLANTA — A billboard near an Atlanta highway reads, “Love Like Him, Live Like Him, Lead Like Him.” The motto refers to Jesus Christ, but the smiling face next to it is that of Bishop Eddie Long.

Long built a humble suburban Atlanta congregation into a giant TV ministry on the strength of his charisma and his interpretation of the Gospels, including the magnetic idea that the faithful will be rewarded with wealth. It’s a doctrine the architect and leader of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church embodies with his own luxury lifestyle, including a private jet, jewels, a luxury automobile and a mansion.

“It’s like the ‘in’ church to be associated with,” said Terry Belton of Charlotte, N.C., who has attended the New Birth church there with his wife. “You feel like you’re going to prosper by being associated with that church. A lot of people go there because of him. We went … because of him.”

Oh, it get’s better (or worse):

“Eddie Long is the embodiment of their way of life, the pathway to their salvation,” said branding expert Goldie Taylor, who lived for years in the neighborhood where New Birth is located and has watched the church’s phenomenal growth.

“If something happens to negatively impact the power of the brand that is Bishop Eddie Long, you have to ask yourself, where will New Birth be?” Taylor said. “If they can’t believe in him, what can they believe in?”

Now call me stupid – but I thought the point of attending church was to express your belief in God and worship with other believers…oh wait, I forgot – Eddie told the State of Georgia that CNB IS NOT a church…forget what I just wrote. I always knew that Eddie was a master marketer, so the fact that he leads a “corporation” makes more sense to me now.

Now, slowly read this tidbit from Carlton “The Heretic” Pearson – I told you, Pearson and Long run in the same circles (literally and figuratively):

“He’s top of the line, one of the best at it,” said Bishop Carlton Pearson, a friend of Long’s for 20 years. “He’s a tall, muscular, well-spoken, handsome black man with power and influence and authority. It’s very intoxicating, both for him, and for those who drink from that same spiked fountain.”

I’m trying to suppress my inner 3rd grader, otherwise I could crack jokes about Pearson’s attraction to Eddie…I’ll just leave his quote with you for a moment…

Alas, the sheeple of CNB will more than likely stand by their embattled CEO, as dutiful representatives of a company are apt to do:

Whatever comes of the lawsuits, members of New Birth may be inclined to stand by their leader because of how he transformed their church, which Spelman College professor William Jelani Cobb called “the spiritual equivalent of Yankee Stadium.”

“To say that you’re a member of New Birth has a certain cachet,” Cobb said. “When you see the plain size of the grounds and the campus, if you’re one that believes in this idea of God’s elect, that’s the most compelling argument that they must be teaching a valid gospel.”

So sheer stadium size is an indication that Eddie Long and wolves of his ilk are “teaching a valid gospel”? No, it’s validation that Eddie and his ilk are speaking what the tickling ears want to hear.

Thank God through His Son Jesus Christ that He is exposing this wolf (and other wolves) as true enemies of the Gospel of Christ. I ask that you prayer for the people of CNB and that the Lord remove their delusion long enough for them to flee this “corporation”.

Thanks for the information. I am still processing what you found and now I feel the strong need to take a look at the Sec. of State’s website here in NC to see just what my church(?) is. One thing’s for sure, Long won’t be sitting down because there’s no one(human) to sit him down.

IST this is some shocking information…I ask last week why Long was positioning himself as if he’s a CEO of a big company rather than as a man of God….Now I understand!!

  3. 3 Broken Pastor October 6, 2010 at 9:34 am

I have been out of town for a few days and had not heard about the corporation news.

Not to defend him but to clarify, most all churches do incorporate and often the pastor holds some office like president or ceo. In fact I think I am the president of the non-profit that our church started. But the corporation is GOVERNED by all sorts of accountability. Some churches and denominations do a great job at accountability.

Did the new article say that the church charter was dissolved and this real-estate holding ‘not-for-profit’ corporation take its place? If that is the case, then wow.

Thanks for bringing this up and following the story, even though it does feed the fire. We do need to know the truth.

Understood BP – and I would expect any non-profit entity to be incorporated (for tax purposes) with a CEO/Chair or some other form of leader in place. Many churches are incorporated and have community development corp.’s that operate outside of the church’s responsibility, but under the same mission. The surprising thing is that the articles of incorporation appear to be for CNB itself and not some side/ancillary entity.

As you mentioned – the bottom line is accountability, and without it egomaniacs feel that they don’t have to “answer” to anybody.

How are you my friend?…Yes, I know it has been ages, but if you ask Uncle Sam, he can prove I have a valid excuse…In fact, he has changed my temporary address yet again, so that I am writing to you from one of the many undisclosed locations that he routinely assigns me to…The blessing though is that I get fairly decent email and internet access out here, as long as I am discreet with my location…Now that I have the prelimaries out of the way, I see that Mr. Long has gotten himself in quite a pickle, no?…

We are allowed to get a couple of news channels out here, (CNN being one) so that is where I first caught wind of the allegations…I was not really surprised, knowing the charlatanistic (is that a word?) ways that ELL was accustomed to. Since so many folks had already said several things that were on my mind, I decided not to throw my half-a-penny into the fray…However, I must tell you that I did have one question about his accountability—that is until today. Your post has answered that my dear friend, and I am just writing to tell you how precise and pinpoint you were on the CEO thing…That’s not just to single out Mr. Long and his folks, because this model seems to be popular among the empty cistern bearers (Jeremiah 2:13)…Oh…yes, obviously you realize that’s what false teachers are, don’t you?…Yes, they are the type of folks that realize sodapop will never quench the thirst, only water can (John 4:14)…But instead of leading people to the FREE water fountain, they put an “out of service” sign on it and constantly advertise how refreshing and smooth the sodas are…And because that’s the lingo that scratches people’s itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3), everybody runs to the soda machine, dropping quarter after quarter after quarter to get something that will never satisfy…And just like the pepsi guy, the emtpy cistern bearers take the money and go laughing all the way to the bank…

It seems like that guy who Good Morning America interviewed (can’t remember his name), you know, that dude who has the church around the corner from Eddie’s (I guess), who says he “hopes this doesn’t even go to court”, and that “I’m glad that THA’ BISHOP finally spoke”…seems like if he’s known Eddie for so long he would have suspected something was going on and held him somewhat accountable or at least said, “you need to repent for what you’re doing”…But his response was that he was “totally shocked” and “didn’t see this was coming”…hmmmm….All these other pastors who have known him for so long have gathered to “pray” for him, but do any of them have the courage to ask him to step down?…I would ask you these questions, but I get the feeling it would be like a scene in that movie “The Great Debaters”, where some kid is about to ask Denzel’s character about last year’s debate team, and before the kid can even get it out of his mouth, Denzel says, “don’t ask a question you already know the answer to”…

Be well my friend, continue to contend for the faith (Jude 3), and know that I’ll always be reading from…well… “somewhere”…LOL!!!

    Solus Christus,

Glad to know you’re doing well, R4C – glad to see my “uncle” is keeping you busy. I think you’re referring to Jasper Williams of Salem Bible Church as the dude with the church around the corner from Eddie. I’m not sure he even “knows” Eddie – aside from competing with him for members for years. All in all, this mess has gotten pretty quiet but will be resolved at some point in the future.

      Stay safe, bro!

  6. 9 commonsense October 12, 2010 at 4:51 pm

I grew up Catholic. My mother allowed us to attend other churches and Bible studies. That was over 30 years ago, so when it comes to female intuition, gut feelings, being opened minded and just plain common sense…why is it I hear and read from some people…”it’s in God’s hand”, or “let God be the judge” or “we shouldn’t judge until all the facts are in”. And these statements were made after Jamal P. stated his case, after four boys came forward, and after text pictures surfaced. This is why I left the church..the answer is right in front of your face but some Christians are so quick to judge other people.

    • 10 speaking truth October 12, 2010 at 7:38 pm

Christians are to judge other professing Christians because it is our responsibility to hold one another accountable – primarily because we represent Christ here on earth. Leaving the church is not the answer. Certainly there are no perfect people, but we must continue to strive for excellence in Christ – and seek leaders who are honestly seeking Him. I pray that God would lead you to an assembly that could use your gifts, and that you can grow in grace with.

  7. 11 minister 414 October 13, 2010 at 11:29 am

HI speaking truth, please return baclk to the dchurch, but pray that God shows you what church to attend. You have to be mindful that the pastor and Elders and Ministers alike, may have a willingness and the call to serve God, however we have flesh too. I do believe that we must be held accountable for our actions, and believe me Fast Eddie will be held accountable to God. Your character and reputation is hard to build once it has been found dammaged or flawed, but you should be attending church in the hopes of finding Christ. Read our word and know it for yourself that way you know what God says about thngs instead of waiting for a Minister to explain it or give you their meaningl Why do I say this: Not all ministers are called by God, some of them want the limelight or the money, this is a calling no one wants, however we are all preachers. A bishop is more than just a title and Mr Long should be walking worthy of that calling, If not He needs to sit down. He never should have dismantled that board, because the deacons are to check the preacher when he gets out of line. So if he is out of line, who doest the checking? Edde knew what he was doing, but let me be clear, God is not playing with us, and when this is over I reckon he will have a nice view from the congregation and a lead elder or associate Pastor will be taking over that flock. Loyalty or not, those people want the more of God. Word to Eddie sell that Bentley, Jesus didnt even ride on horses or camels that much, he walked everywhere. it helps you to be humble. How can you ride in a $350000 car, how many needy peoples rent could you pay at 50000 benz would have been just fine. Nice and luxurious but $350000k if you died today you couldnt take it wth you.

Back in 2005 when the AJC story broke, I remember them saying that EL and Creflo had filed their articles of incorporation in NY state. It was never stated what the difference in law is between NY & GA. I know there must be some significant benefit to have paperwork in NY as opposed to GA, hence the scanty paperwork filed here (GA). Do you or any of your readers have any idea ?

I am also wondering if any of your readers who have posted about the LFA will consider coming forward to support these young men. They may not have experienced the exact same abuse, but since EL was so bold with his crimes, even small things yall have seen and heard could help their cases.

  9. 14 CJ October 15, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Thank you for posting this. Im so glad that you woke up and spoke out. The thing that sickens me is how the “bishop’s” followers ignore I TIM 3:1-8 but will quote the judging/casting stone scriptures in defense of his appalling conduct. Were they concerned about judging when the “bishop” marched against gays…no ! God will continue to EXPOSE the “bishop”. The “bishop’s” koolaid drinkers are in for a rude awakening. God will hold the “bishop” and the koolaid drinkers accountable.

Man, talk about a fantastic post! I?ve stumbled across your blog a few times within the past, but I usually forgot to bookmark it. But not again! Thanks for posting the way you do, I genuinely appreciate seeing someone who actually has a viewpoint and isn?t really just bringing back up crap like nearly all other writers today. Keep it up!

Honestly IST….The first thought that comes to my mind is this, Who in their right mind would take this cat serious after a picture like the one you posted. He has a cheshire cat grin, like he just drank the last of the Kool aid out of the pitcher and put it back in the fridge empty….OH yah you can trust that face along with his silly looking afro hair plugs or wig or animal fur, what is all that foolishness on his head??? Bishop Eddie Wrong, needs to go sit down some dogone where!!

Man, you have come back to the blogosphere at the right time brother. If anyone can expose this has-been pimp gone corporate bigwig, it’s you.

Former scorched earth inner dealings folk like you and I understand the innards of pastor-gone-CEO, but it’s amazes me the saints that don’t.

What is going on in megachurches across the country is shameful in some instances, but hopefully with enough people proclaiming the truth that may be discomforting to many will open the eyes of us all.

    Peace, my brother.
