The “Spiritual Covering” Lie Gone Wrong

***UPDATE 5/17/09*** This article references a story that appeared on the blog “Endtimes Prophetic Words”. Many have accused that blog author of misdeeds and I allowed this forum for both parties to air their grievances. Unfortunately, the volley’s continue back and forth – so I have deleted all comments referencing personal accusations of the blog author AND her defense of herself. Further comments towards anything except the article will not be published.

In the past I have spoken out about several lies that the charismatic church perpetuates in order to garner “submission” from others, specifically “spiritual covering”, “spiritual fatherhood/motherhood”, and the phony “apostolic covering” that we see permeating the church today. The “laying on of hands” (as the picture above depicts), is not “unholy” – in fact, it’s sanctioned by God (Acts 8:17, 1 Timothy 4:14, 2 Timothy 1:6, and so on) – but it is not a game to be played with. In fact, the (real) Apostle Paul clearly warned against “laying hands on anyone too hastily” (1 Timothy 5:22) – thereby calling for a serious reflection upon the call of ministry.

The misunderstood (yet often repeated) mantra is that you must be “launched” into ministry by a “spiritual father” or “spiritual mother”, and that person in turn becomes your “covering”. These people advance the notion that you must be “sent” into ministry by a “covering pastor/bishop/prophet/evangelist” – that you can’t simply respond to the call of God and the urging of the Holy Spirit and go forth declaring the Gospel to the nations.

Further, these liars like to separate those who were “sent” from those who “went”, thereby tainting the ministry credentials of those who “went” without a “covering”. I agree 100% that we all should be accountable to someone else in our Christian walk (think of it as a series of checks and balances), but I refuse to believe that God would bypass me to speak to someone else about me, especially since He said in His Word that He is already my “covering”, not the hireling who begs for my money every week.

Still, the covering scam keeps gaining traction. For example, TD Jakes is Eddie Long’s “spiritual daddy” (seems fitting). Eddie Long has “spiritual sons” from one coast to the other. If I attended the church of one of Eddie’s “sons” and I decided to stop attending so that I could lead weekly bible study and prayer in my basement with a few believers, then I am an outcast – one who did not properly submit to “spiritual authority” and rebelliously left my “fathers house uncovered”.

While one could chuckle at this foolishness from a distance, here’s yet another example of how this heretical thinking continues to grow like a cancer within the Body (courtesy of the blog End Times Prohetic Words):

Apostle Claims Pastor Shot Down Was God’s Judgment For No Apostolic Covering

As many of you know, the Rev. Fred Winters was recently tragically shot down and killed while delivering a sermon at First Baptist Church in Maryville, Illinois. This incident is tragic enough news.

However, a NAR [New Apostolic Reformation] apostle speculated to other apostles that being shot down in the pulpit was judgment from God starting in the House of God, because the pastor had no apostolic ‘covering’!

The article goes on to say:

There is a lot of bad pastoral/apostolic ’covering’ teaching in the church at large, the pimping and the abuse and the fearful superstition is not just prevalent within the NAR – but Lyrica’s is one of the worst statements I have heard. One worries where this type of thinking will lead as it morphs to its logical conclusions among sincere, passionate, devoted but blinded NARzie followers in Joel’s Army …. after all, many of us have not forgotten the NARzie false prophecies about civil war breaking out in the church, and what will happen to the NARzie critics or those who refuse to unify with them…. and spiritual warfare is headed to literal action and literal war as that is where dominionism is going, and must  go by its very nature.

The New Apostolic Reformation is a cult that mimics true Christianity but is sorely lacking a sound biblical foundation. In fact, this was the same group that was propping up and providing “spiritual covering” for Todd “The Tool of Satan” Bentley and his Lakeland, FL circus show last year – culminating in this demonic “apostolic confirmation service” (DISCLAIMER: In accordance to Ephesians 6:10-18, please pray before viewing or listening to any of Todd Bentley’s video or audio recordings. The only way to combat the evil of this day is with the unadulterated Word of God.).

If you think that I and others are engaging in hysterical emotionalism regarding the path that the church is currently on (particularly when a nutjob can kill a minister and other “ministers” explain the cause as a “lack of apostolic covering”), remember the Words of the Lord (my emphasis in bold):

John 16:1-4 (New American Standard Bible)

1“These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.

2“They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.

3These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me.

4“But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

May God have mercy on those who labor in His vineyard while exposing the wickedness of this generation – and anxiously await His return.

    Amen, amen, amen!

How twisted the thought pattern… of an alleged Christian who says a pastor (or anyone for that matter) shot in cold blood essentially deserved it because he/she had not been sent… by some other alleged anointed man.

What foolishness! And yes, quite scary that such a crime and sin is “justified” in the eyes of the minds of Satan’s unwitting slaves.

All the more reason to keep our prayer lives in order.

Look out! You realize that NBSMC Part 2 is in full effect. Elder Luke S. Hall, a former “Capo” for The Pimp of Hampton” has Launched his own ministry, “New Vision Christian Church”. He “Went” and was not “Sent.” My sources at Da Cluub say that the word is out – if they attend Hall’s service that they may as well stay. You know as well as I do a Pimp can’t share his hoes!

I pray that Hall break away from his daddy and SPEAK TRUE DOCTRINE!

    • 3 speaking truth March 18, 2009 at 3:16 pm

Well, escapee, it appears as though the rules at “da club” haven’t changed: attend a former “son’s” new church and you’re dead to the Boss.

That said, I sincerely pray that “NBSMC Part 2” is NOT “in effect”. That brother was a faithful servant who desperatly tried to give the Pimp of Hamptom the benefit of the doubt.

And let’s face it – that brother has a Doctorate in Theology (and not one of those phony $3K degrees from Pimp University…a REAL Doctorate). He knows more about sound doctrine than the Pimp of Hampton can ever know, especially in his current delusional state.

I’m just praying that the brother begins to see the Pimp of Hampton for what he really is – a two-bit hireling…that alone will make him shudder to think about repeating the sins of his former church…

Pastor Hall is definitely not the “spiritual son” that he used to be. He is now competition for Dre. I’m sure that many NBS/HLCC members will be attending his first service. Dre makes constantly mentions that he “went” and not “sent”. We shall see how all of this plays out on Easter Sunday. LOL

        • 5 escapeetoo March 26, 2009 at 12:57 pm

That “Went and Not Sent” crap is not biblical. It is “Betty Croker” made up mess Dre uses to supress his staff.

Only God can anoint one to preach the gospel. Dre needs to get more theological education under his belt and stop “hattin” on Hall.Trust me Dre has his spies out and his radar turned up. Dre want to know who is going to that 1st service! The Club is going to be missing some members; oh I mean giving units or $$$

I only pray that Hall does not try to create a NBS part 2.

  3. 6 KenyaChristian March 18, 2009 at 6:05 am

Good post IST….the spiritual covering lie goes hand in hand with false teaching about the anointing….I don’t know if you’ve done an expose on the misuse of the anointing, but often pastors will relate the ‘anointing’ that’s upon their lives to the spiritual covering, intimidating those that follow them that they can never hope to inherit their ‘anointing’ unless they stay under the pastor’s ‘covering’ or something to that degree…..

  4. 7 Lady D March 18, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Excellcent post, IST. These people do not know the Father and His love and mercy at all-they are truly of their father, the devil. If this dear brother was murdered because he didn’t have apostle-lic covering-then we’re all in someone’s scope.
I left another church last year because of the false apostle’s undying support of Todd ” demon boy” Bentley. Everthing he spoke about was picking up where Todd fell off. Get ready for the revival to hit anytime-we have to postion ourselves, oh and we need money. The guy has pastored a well established church for less that 2 years and half the members have left. You know the lie that he tells, “God has cleaned house and the true remenant remains.”
But I will have y’all know that I did not leave on my own-the grand pubbah apostle got up with a false word that said, “God is shifting the church and if you don’t hold on, yeare gonna get flung! So God flung me because I didn’t hold on-My King is so faithful!!!!
Keep pressing the battle to the gate~

Man, you should shout that from the rooftop Lady D and we all need to hear it! Pimps across the land use that same tired excuse to explain why the seats are emptying in their clubs – blaming those who trust God for choosing Him over them! Sadly, many sheeple are still “hanging on” because they don’t want to let go of what they know – the comfortable pimp – because they’re afraid to launch out with God insteading of staying in a place that He left a long time ago (if he ever resided there in the first place).

I praise God that He “flung” me, you, and many others away from these apostate hirelings! GLORY TO GOD!

  5. 9 gcmwatch March 18, 2009 at 1:40 pm

IST, the spirit behind this “apostolic covering” scheme (besides mammon greed) is the same one which animated the Catholic church of the dark ages. Indulgences anyone? Of course the CC says that indulgences were never meant to be to be sold, but the greedy mammon priests still did it.

Now, these apostles have created a lucrative mammon scheme to rake in the cash in exchange for “speaking into your life” and publicly proclaim you their “son in the gospel”. Just dont let the cash flow dry up or be late.

Im not sure what the going rate is right now, but last time I was told for an “apostle” to lay hands on you, get covering and be a son costs a flat $3,000. Im sure with the economy’s squeeze on the money bags, the price has probably went up and probably includes some amenities.

    Can you tell Im disgusted?

    • 10 speaking truth March 18, 2009 at 2:07 pm

$3K to be an “apostle”?. I made myself an apostle for free, remember?

Of course, you’re welcome to give me a seed offering so that I can cloak you in my apostolic covering – ensuring your protection against the haters of this age. For $5K, I’ll make you a District Overseer and “anoint” you so that you can hustle some change in my name…you take south Georgia and I’ll take north Georgia…

      What do ya say? 😆

  6. 11 gcmwatch March 18, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Uhhh, can you split that up into 6 easy payments with the first payment beginning in 2055?

    • 12 speaking truth March 18, 2009 at 7:34 pm

You see, gcmwatch, that’s what’s wrong with y’all. The sheep just want to take take take from the mand of gawd until I’m empty. Once again, you’re not recognizing one of the gifts of the five-fold ministry that stands (types?) before you! Did God bless you with breath this morning – or is He waiting until giving you 6 equal installments of breath in 2055?

      /speaking in tongues…borderline cursing…/

I just pray that the Lord doesn’t treat y’all the same way y’all treat da prophet/apostle/evangelist/butcher/baker/candlestick maker that he’s called me to be!

😆 …alright, let me stop…I can hardly type anymore from laughing so hard…I gotta learn when to “pump the brakes”… 😆

  7. 14 Michael Pharr March 18, 2009 at 7:26 pm

What about the ‘sowing up’ principle. Where you give to a person (notably a well-known preacher) who’s at the level you want to reach and God will bless you for your greed…I mean faithfulness.

  8. 15 Pamela March 19, 2009 at 12:10 am

This is another thing that the leaders at the church I attend blast to smithereens. The only ‘demand’ that they have is that we grow up, learn how to hear the Lord for ourselves and obey what is being said. There is oversight and guidance as five-fold ministers. BUT they absolutely do not believe in the mantle passing madness (derivative of the spiritual parent/children nonsense). They believe that since we are born again we are made new. We receive an anointing from the holy one. Nothing needs to pass down. No human covering and the like. We need the Lord. He chooses what we are called to do.

One of my favorite instances in the Bible is in Act 13:1-2 where they ministered to the Lord and fasted, then they heard direction about who was to be launched. No money exchanged, no hoops to jump through. Just a pure process of hearing God’s heart and acting accordingly.

If I had heard any hint of a message about spiritual covering I would have left there never to return. It is a miracle that I am anywhere because I refuse to waste another second hearing madness. The two points of contention for me were (1) the outrageous prosperity extortion and (2) the spiritual covering madness for control freaks.

  9. 16 HLCC MEMBER March 24, 2009 at 9:49 pm

You know, really…I dont know exactly what happened with this Pastor and Spiritual Son. But YOU MUST KEEP YOUR MOUTH OFF OF BOTH of these men of God. You dont know what happened, you dont know why. Touch not his anointed, do his prophet no harm.

    The Lord Have Mercy

No one is “putting their mouth” on men of God – I am calling out pimps and liars who profit in the Name of God and His Son. I am certain that you are a member of the Cult of the Pimp of Hampton, simply because you repeat the same misquoted declaration of “touch not mine anointed”, even when you defend other pimps.

The bottom line to this story is this: a nutjob killed a pastor, and other nutjobs who claim to be prophets say that this happened because the victim had no “apostolic authority”. That is a simply stupid declaration. Of course, as a “spiritual grandson/daughter” of Pimp Eddie Long, this makes perfect sense to you.

Follow me to your next comment – since you simply couldn’t leave the blog long enough to consult the scriptures before you exposed your intellect again…

  10. 18 HLCC MEMBER March 24, 2009 at 9:51 pm

by the way…I am a PROUD member of HLCC. and this PROPHET you all call a “pimp” is a man who desires to serve God FULLY! EVERY TONGUE THAT RISES AGAINST SHALL BE CONDEMNED!!!!!!!!11

    • 19 speaking truth March 24, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Even though you could have used a comment thread from many of my articles on the Pimp of Hampton – I’ll address your comment here:

Your “prophet” is a PIMP for profit who is a man of the god of this world and not the God of Heaven. If your pimp was a righteous man, he would stand before you and the other lemmings who still think he’s “anointed” and repent publicly for stealing your money through his tithes, first fruit, and love offerings scams – and he would learn to pay his own bills on time while he exhorts you and your fellow lemmings to do the same.

I suggest that you get away from your PIMP and read the bible that sits in your lap while your PIMP is twisting God’s Word. If you did read IN CONTEXT, you’d know that the “touch not mine anointed” refrain is often misquoted and incorrectly applied because no one is attempting to kill your PIMP, I am simply warning the sheep to stay away from your depserate PIMP. Here is a very detailed exegesis for your review – but since you’d rather be fed by your PIMP, I suppose that the Word will remain a mystery to you.

HLCC MEMBER – why don’t you ask yourself why so many spiritually sound leaders have fled your PIMP – including his heir apparent, A MAN WHO EARNED A REAL DOCTORATE IN MINISTRY? Could they all be wrong, or could your PIMP actually be the reprobate others have claimed him to be (including me)? Every week your PIMP continues to threaten you into “sowing into God’s economy” and “not robbing God” – promising you “favor” if you’re a tither – yet the very Word of God that he twists specifically speaks against all of those things – and lemmings like you continue to line up at the trough waiting to be fed yet again by a PIMP who has the theological depth (and moral aptitude) of a mud puddle.

I pray for you and those like you who cling to this PIMP for profit – that you repent before the Lord and seek Him and not the vipers and hirelings like the PIMP of Hampton who pretend to speak for Him. Until you come to your right mind, your time would be better served reading the Word you so sorely need and not commenting on this or any other blog.

    • 20 escapeetoo March 24, 2009 at 11:38 pm

      HLCC Member,

Kool Aid Drinkers like you really sadden me. Your response tells me that you don’t study the Word on your own.
BTW, Didn’t your daddy say he was not going to worry about the accusers? Why are you taking up for him?

Nevertheless let me suggest something to you. If you are going to defend your “Mand of gawd or Prophet” buttress your defense with the word of God (Eph 6:17) and not with empty words(Ephesians 5:6).If you are going to defend your mand of gawd do so with the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.You have YET to support your position based on God’s word. Stop looking through the eyes of someone else and start reading and praying for understanding yourself.

BE HONEST with yourself HLCC. When was the last time you studied the Word of God on your own without a Landers CD or notes? When did you sit down and ask for revelation from God and not Pasa? When was the last time YOU sought after truth!

Oh one last thing. God never promised condemnation to those who speak out against lies and expose fruitless deeds. I did a complete search of the Bible and the statement “EVERY TONGUE THAT RISES AGAINST SHALL BE CONDEMNED!!!!!!!!11” never appears. What does appear is this:

Eph 5:8-14 – 8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10and find out what pleases the Lord. 11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
      “Wake up, O sleeper,
      rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

OK – now that Mariam has had a chance to clear her name, this forum will no longer be used to discuss anything besides the article it supports. If anyone has any further clarifications or contentions with Mariam, please visit her website to address her directly. No disrespect intended but this is getting too deep into the weeds for me…

Well, I have to admit that I came from up under this same system. My mother lectured me last night because I just stay at home and read my bible but, I just don’t enjoy church in it’s traditional sense anymore. I’m bored when I sit in there. I don’t get nothing out of what’s going on. Eversince I discovered literature such as this and spiritual abuse; I’ve been discovering that there are people all over the world that feel EXACTLY as I do.

    • 23 Ron November 13, 2009 at 10:37 am

GOOD FOR YOU! I to came out of church to find GOD! 2x I did this. Once as a catholic, once as a follower of Jesus! You are a living stone–not a cinder block! KEEP ON STUDING THE WORD! In it you will find (zoe) Life. Remember what Jesus said;”I did not come to bring peace——-. From one stone-to-another,remember who is our chief CORNERSTONE! Agape,Ron.

I totally agree with you. People are individuals and different spiritual beings; so movements with in GOD taps our spirits differently. So do not let anyone’s own views cause your personal relationship with Jesus falter. Stay encouraged in God through Jesus. I do submit; try different church venues to find your fit.

  14. 25 crystalclear April 2, 2010 at 4:27 am

I have read commentary about this and must say that I can see this from both sides of the spectrum. But ultimately, I must side with the perspective that God can also send people directly. When I read the “sent vs. went” commentaries, I can’t help but think about Isaiah 6 when he told God, “here am I Lord. Send me.” And God did just that. Likewise, God sent Moses directly and he sent Christ. Church government is a good and necessary thing, but I think we limit God when we dismiss ministries as “illigitimate” because their origins don’t all follow the same patterns.

    • 26 speaking truth April 2, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Thanks for chiming in crystalclear. I have no argument at all about how God sends people – my argument is against the fallacy that “you’re not official unless Bishop Soandso or Apostle Whathisname sent you out”.
