God Is Sovereign…Right?

Of course He is!

Some, however, still seem to think that we can control Him with our words, or that He’s sitting around in Heaven with His hands in His pockets waiting on us (the “little gods”) to “release” Him into our circumstances. 🙄

John Piper of Desiring God Ministries penned a short yet excellent article over at Christianity.com (hat tip to our brother Job over at Jesus Christology):

“Is God’s Sovereignty Limited?”

I reject this idea because the Bible doesn’t teach it. In fact, it teaches the opposite.

  • It teaches that not a bird falls to the ground apart from our Father’s will.
  • It teaches that the king’s heart is like a river in the hands of the Lord; he turns it wherever he wills.
  • It teaches that when Joseph was sold into Egypt and finally turns around and his brothers are found to be guilty, God says, “You meant it for evil, but I meant it for good.”
  • I reject it because the book of Proverbs says that the die is cast into the lap and its every decision is from the Lord; a man designs his way, but the Lord directs his steps; and on and on…

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – In my opinion, the false teachers advance the “you are little gods” heresy so that you can ascribe god-like qualities to them as well as yourself. This makes it easier for them to endear your allegiance if you see them as god-like.

Not only does God have UNLIMITED sovereignty, but we must also declare His sovereignty to all and admonish all to keep His commandments (1 Timothy 6:12-16 NASB).

It’s sad that so many in the church today skip over these verses in their reading of the text. What we need today is people of God who dare to think! We must admit that we don’t know everything there is to know about His sovereignty but we must adhere to what the Bible says on the subject. If it says that God is sovereign over everything, then we believe it by faith. (Don’t just dismiss it because we might not like the implications of it.)

Rightly said, Roger. Eisegesis has become the popular mode of biblical interpretation today. So, instead of declaring “thus said the Lord”, we’re hearing “In my opinion, God is saying (fill in the blank) and that agrees with my philosophy regarding (fill in the blank)”.

That’s why I continue to pray that the Lord would saturate His church with sound expositroy preachers to combat the heresy that is spewed (and repeated) on a weekly basis.

Thanks for stopping by Roger – very interesting blog, BTW.

God would not be God without His total Sovereignty!

Let IV tell it God “can’t” do everything (I got the CD bruh). The fact is that God’s “Character” wont allow him to do evil or wrong. These heretic pimps twist this to death. You inspired me to expound on this silly theology being spread by the pimps:
