The Pimp Game Moves South…WAY South

After having pimped all that he could out of Mega-Fest visitors here in the United States, Alpha Pimp T.D. Jakes is taking his show on the road, and targeting a whole new continent – South Africa:

MegaFest moves to South Africa later this year

By CHRISTOPHER QUINN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/04/08

Bishop T.D. Jakes is moving MegaFest, the giant Christian entertainment and teaching event that ran in Atlanta from 2004 to 2006, to another continent.

MegaFest International 2008 will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, Oct. 11-12.

Jakes put the event on hiatus after three years in Atlanta, saying he would resurrect it, although not necessarily here.

Attendance had declined over its three-year life from about 500,000 to fewer than 100,000.

When Jakes pulled out of Atlanta after 2006, Derrick Williams, a spokesman for Jakes’ mega-church, the Potter’s House in Dallas, said Jakes made the decision based on post-MegaFest surveys. Attendees found travel and lodging costs burdensome. At least 70 percent of the MegaFest’s visitors came from outside Atlanta, Williams said. (click here to read entire article)

While the article does mention that Jakes’ ministry plans to offer 4 days of free medical care to South Africans, it also states that Jakes moved the event from Atlanta because of the “financial burden” it caused for delegates:

“When you’re the mother of a couple of kids, it’s not something that you can do on an annual basis, ” said Williams, who managed MegaFest for Jakes. “We want to be sensitive to the needs of our delegates.”

So, Jakes’ idea of making this event more accessible and “sensitive to the needs of delegates” is to move it thousands of miles away and charge up to $6,000 to attend?

Ummm…that makes sense 🙄

Jakes (like every other pimp) stands in the pulpit twice a week to declare that you should still “sow into the Kingdom” (i.e. give him your money) – even in your lack, because God wants to test your faith.

I wonder if this means he’ll be “more sensitive to the needs” of his congregation once he’s tapped their pockets dry?

Oh well…what do expect from a man who (according to this MSNBC report) views the liberating Gospel of Jesus Christ as a “product that almost sells itself”:

Hey, you can’t knock this pimp’s hustle. Unlike most of his wanna be followers (or pimps-in-training), at least he’s more than a “one-trick pony” – extorting tithes from his congregation isn’t his only means of support.

Aside from charging people to be his “spiritual sons and daughters”, he does own legitimate businesses – but he also uses them to pimp Jesus Christ.

Allow me to remind you of what the Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 2:17 (I love the New Living Translation of this text):

17 You see, we are not like the many hucksters[a] who preach for personal profit. We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us.

I guess this just doesn’t fit into the “TD Jakes Translation” of Holy Scripture.

That is just crazy. Before her mess Juanita Bynum was targeting Africa also, I have not heard any more about it. I suppose that with so many people all these pimps can see when thinking of Africa are $$$$$$$$$$$$s. And so they move on to “greener pastuers.”

You’ve gotta be kidding me, Pyle! Jakes is moving the circus to South Africa because to continue it in Atlanta would be a “financial burden” on the sheeple? Oh, I’m sure it had nothing to do with the 75% drop in attendance or the contentious relationship with Atlanta’s City Hall ( I seem to remember some haggling over concessions – both in terms of snack sales at the venues, but also wanting some waivers regarding parking and such – help me out ST, you might know more about that than I ). But the bigger question is this: What does TD think is waiting for him in South Africa? Folks who’ll float to his show on a glittering sea of Krugerrands? People there are still calamitously poor generally speaking, and Johannesburg has become one of THE most violent cities on planet Earth, so wouldn’t they be just as “burdened” in order to attend MegaFest?

Listen: I had the pleasure of meeting a man who had led the musical worship for some of Reinhard Bonnke’s meetings who told me that one of the reasons the worship aspect lasts so long (literally hours upon hours of joyous singing in some cases) is that most folks are just happy to have made it to the meeting alive having spent two or three DAYS walking to get there. Most in sub-Saharan Africa are dealing with an entrenched poverty and deprivation that beggars description. Does Jakes really think it matters how the people in South Africa “Reposition” Themselves?

    😆

Maybe the good bishop will be so kind to bring a few copies of his book to give away to help them reposition themselves, Brother K – as long as they reposition their pocketbooks soon after.

Or better yet, maybe the good bishop will drag Dr. Phil along to help prep him for his upcoming talkshow.

Oh, I almost forgot – another one fled the Landers plantation recently

You have to be kidding me! I’m dreading where I’m going to get $250 to go for a Reformed Bible conference next April in Wales [a few hours train journey from London], and he’s making it accessible for people to pay $6000 to go to South Africa???

Either the warm Texas sun has been shining on his bald head for too long, or he is really out to make a profit. He should best “get ready, get ready, get ready” to “reposition” his bank balance…

    Oh Doug…so young, so naive…

Why would you waste $250 on a Reformed Bible Conference?

All there going to do is fill your head with silly little tales about the depravity of man without Christ, salvation through the shed Blood of Christ for the remission of sin, the doctrines of grace and God’s free gift to His children.

C’mon, man – just give the bishop your hard-earned cheddar, and he’ll lay a blessing on you that you won’t have room to recieve! You’ll be repositioning yourself all the way back to London 😀

For goodness sakes…get your priorities together…

Yeah, and on my way to bankruptcy at 17 LOL

I have never been to Mega Fest, nor shown much interest in it, what is it about? I am sure it is not evangelism, therefore it must be more about entertainment. How is going thousand of miles to use Africa a venue, be sensative to the needs of their deligates? Are the deligates stupid or something? Are they so super spiritual that they cannot think as rational human beings? Then there are the Africans, how much will they be expected to pay? There are so many questions I would like answered but only the Lord I would trust to answer me, I certainly would not trust TD or any of his crounies to give me the real truth on this matter.

Hi Chris – here’s a write up on what Mega Fest is (was) when it was last in Atlanta (2006):

Mega Fest is a spiritual event created by Bishop T.D. Jakes. Held in Atlanta annually, Mega Fest features a series of conferences for men, women, children, teenagers, families, and single people. There will also be workshops on home buying, music, and substance abuse. For 2006, the “Celebration of Unity” concert will feature music icon Aretha Franklin. There will also be a celebrity golf tournament at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta. Live remotes will be featured on Radio Disney. Don’t miss the Just Churchin'(TM) comedy show featuring Tommy Davidson and Steve Harvey. The conference will be held July 19-22, 2006 in various Downtown Atlanta venues, including the Georgia Dome, the Georgia World Congress Center, and International Plaza.

Here is the official “marketing” for this year’s conference in South Africa. Basically, it was another “Christian conference” (seminars, preaching, etc.) with more venues and a circus-like atmosphere. Jakes has been doing these for years – and they’ve helped him gain popularity (along with Woman Thou Art Loosed, Man Power, etc.).

Oh come on! Just the other day, I read in the bible where Jesus said, charge for the gospel! He even said, a city on a hill can be hid and only revealed for payment.

Didn’t Jesus came down from the mountain to gain a crowd and charged the people to feed them. Wait, wait and Jesus started Jesus Christ Enterprises and used this to gain from the same Gospel he was Preaching! Right?

Oh, never mind, that’s the nightmare I wake up to everday!

Meanwhile, people are still dying. In Africa and right here in Dallas. One in five Americans still live in a poverty area, and people are still hungry. It breaks my heart

  10. 10 speaking truth June 5, 2008 at 10:51 am

When are you guys going to let go of your logic in trying to analyze this expansion of a pimpistry (pimp-ministry)?

It’s heartbreaking to see you all try to square this up with sound doctrine, the bible, and the Holy Spirit.

I ask that you do what the millions of sheep do when they flock to the arena’s of Jakes, Long, Osteen et al. week after week – suspend logic and “get in the flow” 🙄

  11. 11 Chris June 5, 2008 at 10:53 am

Thanks speakingtruth, but help me here my brother, how can keeping it in Africa help when “attendees found travel and lodging cost burdensome”? Was the 70% that traveled to Atlanta from somewhere close to South Africa and would find it more cost effective keeping it there? Using sound reasoning, I cannot see the sanity in this, unless it is more about “offering free medical care to South Africans” and less about non-South Africans that would wants to attend .

  12. 12 speaking truth June 5, 2008 at 11:05 am

Chris, see my comment above your post. As I say, you’ve got to suspend logic in order to understand this.

Most of the folks who came to Mega Fest here in the ATL were from the U.S. I don’t know of any specific information about the # of attendees who come from a particular area (if anyone knows, feel free to point us to that info).

The fact remains that it’s no small fete to host this thing on another continent – especially if the excuse for doing so is that attendance had dropped at the previous venue (one that is easier to get to, I might add).

As for giving free heathcare, Jakes could load medical personnel and supplies on his private plane and accomplish that task without all of this fanfare. This action – like most of the similar acts from the pimps – flies in the face of Matthew 6:1-8.

But what do they care about scripture, right?

Like I said before Chris, you’re gonna give yourself a headache trying to figure this thing out…just “get in the flow”

  13. 13 Caught Thinking June 5, 2008 at 11:40 am

The above scripture deals with giving to the poor. Seems to me there is always more selling out, oops I meant selling, than anything else.

Okay, okay, get in the flow. Give follow obey, give follow obey, give follow obey…

  14. 14 speaking truth June 5, 2008 at 11:44 am

Even more direct CT is the posture of giving described in Matthew 6:1-8 – i.e. not for show, patting yourself on the back, etc…

    That’s it…keep chanting…give, follow, obey…give, follow, obey

  15. 15 Chris June 5, 2008 at 12:30 pm

    Give,follow,obey…give,follow,obey…give,follow, obey…give,give,give,give.

  16. 16 Brother K June 5, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Say ST, I noticed a little typo there in one of your graphs:

” I ask that you do what the millions of sheep do when they flock to the arena’s of Jakes, Long, Osteen et al. week after week – suspend logic and “get in the CASHflow” ”

…there, all fixed. I can has trip to Afrika now?

  17. 17 speaking truth June 5, 2008 at 2:18 pm

    “get in the CASHflow”

    HA! 😆

    True indeed, Brother K…true indeed.

And yes, you are now allowed to surrender $6,000 to me so that you can go to South Africa and get blessed…I’ll make sure “the bishop” gets it…;-)

Hurry Brother K – spaces are filling up as we speak…you don’t want to miss Gawd, do you?

    Hey IST,
My first post on your site.
Man like Jakes what you shouldn’t doubt about them is the fact that they are astute businessman. Him coming to Africa is nothing but a multiproliferation of his market share.
We all ought to know is normally the middle class man/woman who gives alot to church causes, as it is his/her ambition to move to the next economic bracket and this conference gives them a chance to “saw a seed” for that purpose – for most people christianity is nothing short than playing the lottery.
It will also give Jakes to spend less on administrative costs, as the dollar is 7.5 to 1 the rand and still offer a first class affair. Look at the ad and search for words like “African economic hub”- he knows there’s money to be made. “5 excursions” – not 1 but 5, he is just trying to appeal to the flesh of those prideful americans who want to gloat that there were in the motherland and contend that we are not the monkeys we are made out to be,
It will also give jakes a chance to gloat about his near deity status in Africa and to aford him the liberty to twist Deuteronomy 28:1-6 really good.
    Thanks

  19. 19 speaking truth June 10, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Welcome Encouraged – it took you long enough to get here 🙂

I agree – Jakes is an astute businessman. The problem is that his business revolves around pimping the Name of the Lord. He can write all of the motivational books he wants, produce as many Tyler Perry-esque plays, and get a talk show all he wants, but the Gospel message is supposed to be shared freely (1 Corinthians 9:17-19). He should get a reasonable salary – but from those in his congregation.

As an African living on the continent of Africa, doesn’t it sicken you that mega-pimps are starting to target your country as some sort of example of “evangelism”?

It will also give jakes a chance to gloat about his near deity status in Africa and to aford him the liberty to twist Deuteronomy 28:1-6 really good.

Yup, but he might also take the time to read Deuteronomy 28:15-68 to get the other side of the coin as well.

    IST,
To Jakes, Jesus is nothing more and nothing less than a product that he can use to trade in the stock market…unless he repents of this transgression and many others he was not of the Lord to begin with.
The fact that they are, or he is targeting Africa, it makes me both sad and happy.
Sad because most of us Africans we regard whatever comes from America in high regard, also given our social-economic circumstances but mostly due to lack of proper theological training we are prone to listen and believe on the garbage that he’ll spew. I am a happy man because I know its only a matter of time before Christ comes to fetch His bride.
My prayer as well hope is that we will resist the devil and he will indeed flee from us.
IST, he will not go beyond verse 6 because it doesnt suit his “testilies”, and we know that these people make a living out of twisting scriptures.
